Taking only five years to build, the bridge crosses the River Thames, hosts Blackfriars rail station, and, surprisingly, boasts a total of 4,400 roof-mounted solar panels making it the world\u2019s largest solar-powered bridge!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"London's Blackfriars Solar-powered Rail Station\" alt=\"London's Blackfriars Solar-powered Rail Station\" src=\"https:\/\/static.guim.co.uk\/sys-images\/Guardian\/Pix\/pictures\/2014\/1\/22\/1390410294523\/414f87f4-9464-45d8-ab03-6bca13f7eb4b-460x276.jpeg\" width=\"460\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Solar-powered Bridge Will Cut Carbon Emissions<\/h2>\n<p>The panels are expected to cut the stations\u2019 carbon emissions by an estimated 511 tonnes per year. (That\u2019s roughly the average weight of 73 African elephants for some fun perspective!) The photovoltaic panels will provide up to half of the energy for London Blackfriars station. This will reduce the carbon footprint of its train routes to the south east of England.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"First Capital Connect\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.houghton-international.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/49192624_49192623.jpg\" width=\"304\" height=\"171\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What First Capital Connect Said:<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cElectric trains are already the greenest form of public transport!\u201d David Statham, Managing Director of First Capital Connect stated, \u201cThis roof gives our passengers an even more sustainable journey. The distinctive roof has also turned the station into an iconic landmark visible for miles along the River Thames.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Worlds Largest Solar-powered Bridge\" alt=\"Worlds Largest Solar-powered Bridge\" src=\"https:\/\/static.guim.co.uk\/sys-images\/Guardian\/Pix\/pictures\/2014\/1\/22\/1390410236172\/187bdab6-971d-4bee-b205-534da015698e-460x276.jpeg\" width=\"460\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The Company Behind the Solar-powered Bridge:<\/h2>\n<p>Solarcentury installed the panels in a series of phases over the past two years \u2013 only stopping to reduce inconvenience during the 2012 Olympic Games. It was one of the company\u2019s most complex tasks to date as a giant jigsaw over a large river which was a lot more complicated than a warehouse rooftop where they would normally install them. &#8220;We had different sections of roof available at different times to fit in with this complicated jigsaw of getting everything up and going,&#8221; explained Gavin Roberts, Solarcentury&#8217;s senior project manager.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Iconic image of Blackfriars Solar-powered Bridge\" alt=\"Iconic image of Blackfriars Solar-powered Bridge\" src=\"https:\/\/static.guim.co.uk\/sys-images\/Guardian\/Pix\/pictures\/2014\/1\/22\/1390408701099\/f5064b1c-77cb-4594-b4b8-43074a20f613-460x276.jpeg\" width=\"460\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>London&#8217;s Efforts and The Future!<\/h2>\n<p>It is expected that the new solar-powered bridge will give a major boost to London\u2019s efforts to become a sustainable city. Solarcentury&#8217;s\u00a0 Suzanna Lashford, head of commercial sales, hopes the project will inspire more developers to turn towards other sources of renewable energy. She said, &#8220;Network Rail has invested funds into the project is a great sign for the solar industry.
