They often have serious financial and emotional effects on the\nvictims. According to the ONS Crime report, the average cost of a residential\nburglary in the UK is \u00a33,030, in the year ending March 2019 the UK witnessed a\ntotal cost of almost \u00a3900 million from residential burglaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The seriousness of protecting your home is not something to take lightly. Luckily, with increased awareness, homeowners are becoming savvier to the necessity of protecting their valuables and loved ones. Analysis from <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/\">Google trends<\/a> shows an 11% increase in queries relating to \u201chome security\u201d over the past year within the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Home Security Checklist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here at The Solar Centre, we\u2019ve devised a home security\nchecklist which is loosely based on hints and tips by former burglars, as no\none gives better advice on the subject than those with firsthand experience.\nThis list is designed to be the ultimate guide on keeping your home safe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Home security basics<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lock your doors and close your windows. <\/li><li>Ensure doors are sturdily installed.<\/li><li>Consider putting screws on your door frames if you are fearful your doors are not secure.<\/li><li>Steel is a perfect material and avoids the temptation for burglars to kick down your door.<\/li><li> Change your locks when you move in and if you lose your keys then get your locks changed immediately.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t leave keys under doormats or pots, instead find a more secure spot.  <\/li><li>Keep your valuable goods away from windows.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to protect your most valuable possessions, so we\u2019ve collected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/crimeandjustice\/bulletins\/crimeinenglandandwales\/yearendingmarch2019\">data<\/a> on how some of the most commonly stolen items have changed over the years. If you believe radios are too clich\u00e9 to fool burglars, investigate streaming some anti-theft home occupancy sounds. <\/li><li>Trim any plants back to ensure you are completely viewable to the street.<\/li><li>If you are worried about leaving your house alone, ask a neighbour to check in.<\/li><li>Avoid posting about any holiday on social media.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Be wary of your social interactions and surroundings<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stay vigilant to suspicious lurkers outside your\nhome.<\/li><li>Never let anyone into your home without\ncredentials (they may be checking out your valuables and security system to see\nif it is worth robbing you).<\/li><li>Do not let strangers in to use your phone or any\nother facilities.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Get the right equipment<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Conceal wiring on your security system (this can\nbe disconnected by intelligent burglars)<\/li><li>Avoid spring-latch locks as they can be loided,\nthis is where an expert at breaking and entering slips a plastic card against\nthe latch to unlock the door. Deadbolts are a far better alternative.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Investing in the latest security solutions is the best way to scare burglars. Worryingly the number of victims falling for repeat burglary incidents has risen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2019\/10\/14\/victims-repeat-burglaries-rise-16-per-cent-year-organised-crime\/\">16% over the past year<\/a>. Burglars have no reason not to return if they have been successful once, and considering they already know the best escape routes and types of valuables you have; it saves them time planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spending Money On a Solid Security System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping your home secure doesn\u2019t have to break the bank.\nBelow we outline different home security choices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Anti-theft home occupancy devices <ul><li>Home Occupancy Sounds (Price estimate: free) <ul><li>Some people don\u2019t trust simply using radios\nanymore. Hence, home occupancy sounds were invented as solutions for when you\nare going away for a weekend or long holiday. The idea is to play ambient mundane\nhouse sounds from a speaker as if to simulate occupancy. These are completely\nfree and you are able to get these sounds on streaming services such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotify.com\/uk\/\">Spotify<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deezer.com\/en\/\">Deezer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\">YouTube <\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Security Timer Plugs (Price estimate: \u00a310-\u00a320) <ul><li>Another option for when you are away is a\nsecurity timer plug. These will enable you to create the illusion that the\nhouse is occupied by setting a timer on lamps, televisions and radios.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Burglar Alarms<ul><li>Smart Home Alarms (Price estimate: \u00a3190 &#8211; \u00a3600) <ul><li>Described as the future of burglar alarms, smart\nhome security has received a vast amount of interest in recent years. They\noperate as a traditional alarm but allow you to control it completely from your\napp on a smartphone or tablet. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Unsurprisingly, like all smart home devices,\ntheir unique functionality comes at a steeper price. However, typically smart\nhome alarms are combined with an entire system (wireless security cameras,\nsirens, door locks and state of the art motion sensors). Systems can be\ninstructed to record when certain things happen, i.e. a door opens. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Low-value devices can cost just \u00a3190, but for\nthe whole security package, you would expect to spend up to \u00a3600. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Wired Alarm Systems vs Wireless Alarm Systems\n(Price estimate: depends on the size of home) <ul><li>Hardwired alarm systems are renowned to be\nsuperior in terms of reliability. Furthermore, if your home is already prewired\nfor a security system, wired systems will be very straightforward to install,\nhence it may be worth opting for this. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Alternatively, if you don\u2019t have a security\nsystem pre-installed, a wireless system may be the best option. Installation in\nthis instance will be a lot simpler and there will be no necessary home\nmodifications to make. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Another advantage of wireless systems is that\nthey can be used in remote places where wired systems are unable to reach.\nFurthermore, the fact they&#8217;re no visible cables means the system is next to\nimpossible for burglars to tamper with. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>CCTV<ul><li>Night Vision CCTV (Price estimate: \u00a3100 &#8211; \u00a3250) <ul><li>Considering for both weekend and weekday\nburglaries, evenings are the preferred time of day for 61% of burglaries, night\nvision is a worthy investment.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Depending on your budget night cameras can show\nblack and white or sometimes coloured images of your home in the pitch black. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Mini Cameras (Price estimate: \u00a330 &#8211; \u00a399) <ul><li>Typically employed for indoor security, mini\ncameras can be efficient in identifying burglars due to their inconspicuous\nnature, but for this reason, they are not recommended as a scare tactic. They can,\nhowever, also be a cheap solution for stairwell monitoring for small children\nand elderly relatives. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Door Security <ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/crimeandjustice\/bulletins\/crimeinenglandandwales\/yearendingmarch2019\">The\nNature of Burglary report<\/a> also shows 70% of burglars came through the front\ndoor. Looking at greater depth, 29% of the time the lock was forced open, while\n14% of the time the door was not locked. It may seem obvious but making sure\nyour door is locked and the lock is bolted could severely reduce your chances\nof being burgled. A deadlock should be tested to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Standards#The_standards\">BS 3621<\/a>.\n<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>In addition to this, ensure your door frames are\nsolid, estimated door measurements should be 4.4cm thick with 10cm hinges. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>If you choose to further screw your door, ensure\nthey are compliant to British Standard BS 7950.&nbsp;\n<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Steel doors are preferred as they discourage\nburglars from kicking down your door. Wooden doors and doors with glass panels\nshould ideally be changed if you feel you live in a high-risk burglary region.\n(link to burglary region table)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Driveway Security Bollards (Price estimate: \u00a3100-\u00a3500)\n<ul><li>For some, cars are one of our biggest financial\ninvestments and as such can be a prize target to thieves. One popular security\nmethod here is to employ a driveway security bollard. These can be raised and\nlowered automatically on approach using a fob key. Alternatively, at a lower\ncost, homeowners can purchase a security bollard that requires manual action. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Garden Security <ul><li>Sheds and garages are an easy target. Often\nhomeowners sacrifice measures here in order to prioritize their budget with indoor\nsecurity. Burglars know this and take advantage. Outdoor buildings are\nparticularly vulnerable at night (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/crimeandjustice\/bulletins\/crimeinenglandandwales\/yearendingmarch2019\">78%\nof burglaries in a non-connected building near a dwelling happen in the\nevening)<\/a>. Hence combining security with night vision is wise. Padlocks on\nshed and garage doors fitted with battery-powered alarms can be extremely\neffective and cost just \u00a315. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesolarcentre.co.uk\/catalog\/Solar_Security_Lights-78-1.html\">Security\nlights<\/a> (Price estimate: \u00a315 &#8211; \u00a3200) <ul><li>Lights are a fantastic option for garden\nsecurity. They can either be manually turned on or triggered by movement. Often,\nthey are enough to deter burglars from coming again, as they act as an initial\nwarning sign of your solid security system.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Window Security <ul><li>Another important insight from The Nature of Burglary report shows 25% of burglaries in 2018 happened by intruders entering through a window. Apart from keeping windows shut and locked, make sure all windows are fitted to double glazing standards making the windows harder to break. Any new windows must be in line to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Standards#The_standards\">British Standard 7950\/ PAS 24<\/a>.
