The globe is made out of thin copper
I've installed them and the lights came on but not for very long. It was a sunny day but it is still only March. Can I get them to last longer by turning them off and letting the battery get a good charge before using them?

The units won't come fully charged. Prior to start using the lights you should always leave the lights switched off for 3-5 days and allow the batteries to built up charge. The run time would be extended.
How much are the batteries and how often do you have to replace them

Copper is just the effect, Copper in colour so no problem with turning green.
what is the spacing between the lanterns and is the solar/battery case at the end of the string? (it would be to put over a tent entrance)

The lanterns are equally spaced 50cm apart. The solar panel with it's integrated battery are at the end of the string, 2m along the string from the first lantern.
