UK funding guide · updated July 2026
Sometimes—but there is no universal UK scheme giving every household free panels. Help is targeted, and a home assessment decides which improvements are suitable.
The short answer
Free is possible, but only if your household and home qualify
In England, the Warm Homes: Local Grant can pay for agreed energy-saving work for eligible private homes. Solar panels are one possible measure—not an automatic entitlement. Across Great Britain, ECO4 may also support eligible low-income or vulnerable households through energy suppliers and local referrals.

Where to check for support
England
Warm Homes: Local Grant
You may qualify if you are on a low income, receive certain benefits or live in an eligible postcode, and the privately owned home normally has an EPC rating of D to G. Your council arranges the assessment and any agreed work.

Energy Company Obligation (ECO4)
ECO4 focuses on less energy-efficient homes and households in fuel poverty. Benefits and local or supplier Flex routes can establish eligibility, but the supplier chooses which projects to fund. The current scheme runs to 31 December 2026.
A safer process
Check before you commit
Start with an official checker
Use the government, your council or an energy supplier. An advert or installer cannot decide whether you qualify on its own.
Let the home assessment decide
Support is based on the household and the property. Solar panels may be considered, but insulation, heating or other improvements may be more suitable.
Wait for a written offer
Confirm what is funded, who owns the equipment and whether you must contribute before allowing work to begin.
