FAQs: Evo SMD Solar Security Light

Frequently asked questions

Can the light be directed downwards.

Asked by Shiona on 24 Dec 2023

Yes it can be pointed downwards and secured in place.

Can you tell me the dimensions of the light fitting and the solar panel please, as these do not appear on the website write up. Thank you

Asked by Steve Craggs on 29 Oct 2023

Hi Steve, The light fitting would be with just two screws. The Sola panel woud require also 2. all provided. The panel is 22cm wide and 14cm tall

Hi, I want to light the alleyway that runs along the side of my house. It's about 10m long so I was going to mount the light at the halfway point but will the PIR pick up people approaching the alley from either end? Is the angle of detection wide enough for this or will it only detect once you have entered the alley and crossed in front of the light?

Asked by Steve Coates on 24 Oct 2021

The sensor has 120 degrees detection angle.

Is it ok if the solar panel gets wet, I've had lights previously that need keeping under the roof eaves to protect the solar panel.

Asked by Kirsty Roberts on 25 Feb 2021

It is ok if panel gets wet, as the water will run off it.

Are spare parts available for the EVO SMD. ?

Asked by Keith Dixon on 18 Jan 2021

As these are sold as one unit sadly there are no spares. however if you are having any issues please email support@thesolarcentre.co.uk

Can any number of extension cables be joined in order to have gaps beyond ten metres between the light and the solar panel ?

Asked by Julie Smith on 10 Jan 2021

That is correct, there is about 10% drop in each extension. They can be found here

Will the sensing unit rotate through 180 degrees ie can motion be detected behind the the light?

Asked by Neville Hawkin on 20 Nov 2020

No motion cannot be deetected behind the light.

How long is the cable between the light unit and charger panel? The short cable on the one I have means the solar panel is on a north facing wall and, while it's worked fine all summer, will not work unless the day has been very sunny.. Thank you.

Asked by Jules on 14 Dec 2019

5 metres between the panel and the light.

Do you sell spare batterys for evo smd pro.

Asked by Alan Brown on 19 Nov 2019

I am afraid at this time we do not sell batteries for the EVO SMD PRO.

Hi what is the max height we mount the solar Evo SMD so the PIR works

Asked by Sarah on 3 Nov 2019

The range of the motion sensor is 8m so we would suggest 6-8m max depending on how much of an area you would like the light to be triggered in.

Would the sensor detect mice? We have a mice problem with them eating wires in our car and we're looking into deterrents.

Asked by David Laird on 1 Nov 2018

Mice would be too small to trigger the light unless they were able to get very close to the sensor.

How far light shine from the solar panel

Asked by Barry Mayo on 2 Sep 2018

Hi Barry, I have this light in my garden and lights right to the end, some 90 feet but the closer to the light the more powerful. It's very subjective and depends on ambient light and what you are lighting. My decking reflects loads of light vs the grass. The Pro and Elite revisions are much brighter so it depends on what you are looking for. Please contact us for any advice to suit your needs.

Is the lamp available in white?

Asked by Richard Page on 26 Aug 2018

We only have the lamp available in black.

How dark does it need to be for the light to come on, is this customisable?

Asked by Chris Stanley on 27 Mar 2018

The light becomes active around dusk. You can't change the setting but you can change the position of the panel. We always recommend the panel to be south facing to get the most light during the day.

Could the solar panel power a other device that excepts the power lead? i.e a small radio with a d.c. input.

Asked by Lee Summers on 19 Mar 2018

The SMD range isn't designed to be added to. You could, of course, add to it yourself but it would invalidate the warranty. Our GEO kit range is designed for you to added whatever you want, radios, lights etc See our solar lights kits here

Theoretically, would it be possible to separate the sensor from the light, snip the wires, reconnect it with a longer wires and mount it away from the actual light? Thanks :)

Asked by Will on 11 Mar 2018

Theoretically yes, however, we wouldn't recommend it as it may introduce water ingress issues and would invalidate your warranty.

"500 Triggers Per Night Once motion is detected, this light can activate up to 500 times a night." - could you please update on what circle it is based(1 minute, 3 minutes)? Have you tried to estimate the time of constant lighting?

Asked by Eduard on 27 Feb 2018

It's based on the minimum setting of 15seconds. From a full charge, the light could stay on up to 125mins.

The picture of this product shows the Solar Panel being mounted horizontally, can this be mounted vertically instead?

Asked by Paul Barnes on 6 Jan 2017

Yes, the solar panel can be installed on vertical or horizontal surfaces.

why is the light still on only very faintly ,and never goes out completely even when altering all the sensors it will not go out so must be draining charge all time,

Asked by Hana Parker on 10 Dec 2016

Sometimes this will happen however we bulid in lots of redundancy to ensure this shouldn't cause any issues. As always if you having problems with your light please contact us and we'll get you up and running asap.

is this suitable for very hot climate? 40'c +

Asked by john on 30 Nov 2016

Yes, we've had no heat related issues with these lights.

What size is the solar panel?

Asked by David on 26 Sep 2016

Measures 135mm x 220mm x 20mm

Does the PIR sensor rotate horizontally as well as vertically please?

Asked by Kev G on 16 Jun 2016

Yes

Can I run 2 solar panels to one light? Positioning of panel difficult to get permanent charge from the sun so thought I could have 2 panels in different positions so could mount the panels in 2 different places.

Asked by linda on 9 Jun 2016

This unit only allows use of one solar panel. There are extension cables if this helps.

I have a prior version of this light. The battery drained completely. I recharged it for a couple of weeks (and I live in a very sunny place). When I turned it back on the light came on just fine but I'm having trouble calibrating it, lots of trouble. Could you please specify the steps required to calibrate the settings? Thank you. Ted

Asked by Ted Stresen-Reuter on 7 May 2016

We always recommend starting at the minimum settings and working your way up until you find a setting which you are happy with.

Good afternoon, just wondering if you stock or can get hold of replacement batteries for the Evo SMD Solar Security Light? Also is it possible to let me know what type of battery they use and their size? Best regards Paul Riches

Asked by Paul Riches on 28 Mar 2016

There shouldn't be a need to replace it immediately. We are looking at adding the battery to the website soon.

Am wanting to instal 2 solar powered security lights can the both run from one panel or do I have to use a panel for each

Asked by Stephen kingston on 27 Jan 2016

It is one solar panel per each light. You cannot run two from one panel.

Hi when will you have an extension cable for this light please?

Asked by Dawn on 13 Jan 2016

We have an extension cable (5m) available now.

Hi, I hope to install these lights on an east facing wall, its an openish garden spot but being london there are tall buildings around which stop all direct sunlight from reaching ground floor level through the winter months. Do they need direct sunlight to work?

Asked by naomi on 7 Dec 2015

The solar panel needs as much direct sunlight as possible for optimal performance.

Can the sensor be angled? I had hoped to fit on garage, just over 2m high to point straight down a drive. I see range is 90 degree and am concerned as to whether it will pick up movement coming up drive.

Asked by Pat on 8 Nov 2015

The sensor can be angled up and down and side to side. We do not recommend pointing it directly downwards as it may not pick up movement coming up the drive and only movement underneath it.

what size is the solar panel tks Mike

Asked by MIKE THORPE on 12 Oct 2015

19 x 19 x 6cm

Are the bulbs easily replaceable and available?

Asked by Dave on 5 Oct 2015

The bulbs are not replaceable. They are SMD bulbs which never blow like normal bulbs would do.

1. Read good comments about this product - Build my confidence to buy! 2. Does the sensor bypasses the other objects like shaky tree branches/ leaf in wind? 3. If yes, does this sensor has human detection circuit?

Asked by Vineet on 1 Oct 2015

The sensor can be adjusted for sensitivity so it will not react to shaky branches and leaves on the wind. It is a Passive Infrared sensor.

What is the length of cable from sensor to unit Have you managed to source extension cable Thanks George

Asked by George on 27 Sep 2015

The length is 5m. We are looking to have an extension cable in the next 6 weeks.

I see that the PIR detects movement up to 12 meters away, but what is the angle of detection please?

Asked by J Manning on 25 Sep 2015

It is 90 degrees from front of sensor and 180 degrees so would catch somebody walking across it as well.

Just had mine delivered. Awesome. Second purchase from you guys. On the solar panel, there is a clear protective film. Should this be peeled off ?

Asked by Michael on 12 Sep 2015

This should be peeled off. The protective film should be quite obvious as it will overlap the edges.

Can you switch the light off temporarily during the evening?

Asked by Angela Klawitter on 9 Aug 2015

You can turn the light off using the manual switch on the bottom of the light.

Whatvare the dimensions of the light please. What area does the light cover approx please.

Asked by Karen Garwood on 28 Jun 2015

Light body is: 150 x 110 x 150mm. It will light up to 20m. The Evo SMD Pro will go further and is our most recent addition in this range.

Can the light be made to stay on continuously?

Asked by Francisco on 14 Jun 2015

Unfortunately not. Your best bet is a Garden Spotlight.

how many led are there in this light

Asked by paul gray on 29 Apr 2015

6 SMD's. This is the new type of LED.

How do you stop the light coming on in the daylight hours please should the dial be pointing to the sun or the moon emblem

Asked by ian scarfe on 20 Mar 2015

Please can you check that the solar panel is receiving direct sunlight. The lux sensor is in the solar panel. If the solar panel is shaded during the day then it could be activating because it believes it is night-time.

How can I extend the solar panel wiring? Can you supply an extension or the wire and i have to solder at my own risk?

Asked by Yves Johnson on 3 Feb 2015

Currently we do not have an extension cable for this light. This is something we hope to have in place around spring-time.

Is it possible to carry out the initial charge via mains rather than the solar panel?

Asked by William on 3 Jan 2015

This is not possible. There is no way to plug the unit in to the mains and could be potentially dangerous to do so.

Hi, What is the voltage and amps produced by the solar panel? I would like to install two of these lights on the side of a single story building, so the light and solar panel cable will be within reach of anyone on the ground. If the cable between the solar panel and light is damaged or cut, I need to know that touching the cable attached the solar panel will not be dangerous. Regards

Asked by Paul Davison on 8 Dec 2014

It shouldn't be dangerous. Solar panels tend to trickle charge batteries and don't produce a high enough voltage (usually around 6v) to give a substantial shock.

I cannot seem to find in any descriptions, what type of bulb is fitted to the Evo SMD Security Light and how long do the bulbs last

Asked by Errol Taylor on 3 Dec 2014

The bulbs are SMD's (surface mounted diodes). They are the little yellow squares you can see in the picture in the middle of the light unit. The SMD is the new LED and can go for as long as LEDs but use less energy.

Hi, we purchased and Evo SMD security recently, once installed it didn't work. I then followed the trouble shooting tips and charged or for three days and with the recommended settings but yet it still doesn't work. Any thing else I can do? !

Asked by Andy on 24 Oct 2014

Please contact the office. It sounds like your unit may have a fault and needs to be replaced.

What is the range of the PIR sensor?

Asked by Richard Lee on 23 Oct 2014

8m from the front of the PIR sensor.

Why has my solar eye security light stopped working after just 12 months?

Please contact: Returns@TheSolarCentre.co.uk to complete some troubleshooting so we can resolve the issue.

I am interested in these lights for a path in a wooded bit of my garden...will the shade from the trees prevent the battery charging?

Asked by isabel milner on 13 Oct 2014

The trees will reduce the charge however the light will probably still work just fine. Pay attention to the shadows that occur where you place the panel around midday, if you can keep the panel out of the shade around this time you will be fine.

Hi. Will the solar panel still charge the battery during daylight, even if the PIR unit is in a permanently dark space? I ask because the statement at Amazon.co.uk says, "At dawn the Evo SMD stops activating and starts charging again ready for the night ahead" which might suggest light must be detected by the PIR for the system to allow the battery to recharge. Thanks.

Asked by Alex Quant on 11 Oct 2014

Yes, the panel is trying to charge the light whenever the light is not activated, regardless of the PIR.

Does this light have an on/off switch so we can use it manually and not just rely on the pir. We want to use it in a stable but don't want the light to come on when the horse moves only when we switch the light on.

Asked by caroline on 3 Oct 2014

This does not have a manual on switch. It does have an override off switch but only activates (shines) on PIR detection.

Hi the round tube connecting the light to the sensor has come loose is this correct or is their a fault on the unit

Asked by Stuart Barlow on 3 Oct 2014

This sounds like a fault on the unit. Please contact: Returns@TheSolarCentre.co.uk to resolve the issue.

Could you supply me dimensions of the light unit and pir ?

Asked by Steve on 30 Sep 2014

The light unit and PIR together is approx. 11.5 x 14.5 x 9.5 cm

It does not have an extra socket.

340 lumens is equivalent to what ? I'm just wondering is it brhghter than 60 LED lamp or not ?

Asked by Marcin on 31 Aug 2014

It is roughly 100watts.

Hi, I want solar lights in my back garden, but it 's north facing . I have sun on the end of the garden, but is limited throughout the day. The garden is about 10 meters long. The only way I could do this is to have a long enough cable to reach the front of the house then run it round the outside wall! Please do you have anything like that in stock? James Harrison

Asked by James Harrison on 3 Aug 2014

A lot of our security lights can be used with the appropriate extension cable (available on the website). The Evo SMD does not have an extension cable yet. I would recommend The Eye Solar Security Light instead.

Hi, I really like the look of the Evo SMD Solar Security Light. I'm just wondering how long the cable is that connects the solar panel to the light? Kind regards Rhys

Asked by Rhys on 27 Jul 2014

The cable between the panel and light is 5m.

it comes with battery? if so what type and often it require replacing? thank you..Troy

Asked by Troy on 25 Jul 2014

It comes with a Lithium Ion battery that won't need replacing for at least 2 - 3 years depending on usage.

If the 5m cable from the panel to the light is not long enough do you do an extension cable?

Asked by Mike on 18 Jul 2014

There is no extension cable available at this time. It may be something we add later.

How powerful/bright is the light in lumen?

Asked by marc beale on 8 Jul 2014

It is 350 lumens.

Can the length of cable between the cell/lamp and the solar panel be shortened easily, so the lamp and panel can be mounted near to each other without messy excess cable? Thank you for your assistance.

Asked by Hazel on 1 Jul 2014

The cable cannot be easily shortened.

How long is the cable between solar cell and panel please. Also how does the light output compare to the curve.

Asked by Tony Bennett on 12 May 2014

There is 5m of cable. The Eco Wedge is brighter than the Curve Solar Motion Light as it is directed light rather than diffused light.
