the solar panel is contained within the unit, attached to the base of the light. It is fully rechargeable via solar power, but it must be exposed to the light and cannot be charged behind glass (for example, indoors on a windowsill) as this blocks out up to 98% of all UV rays which will not allow the light to gain and convert enough energy to run efficiently.

It would be better to use the spike and secure it inside the ground. But it can also be placed on the patio area if you wish to. The base is flat.
